Happy holidays! I hope all is well with you and you are enjoying the end of an excellent year! I am writing on behalf of the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan to ask for your help.2017 has been an amazing year for the Humane Society. The cornerstone of the year has been commencement of construction of our new, 13,000 square foot shelter on M-139 in Royalton Township. Progress has been excellent! Masonry and framing work is completed; electrical and plumbing inspections have been passed; drywall and painting work has begun; and we are on schedule for completion in February 2018. All of the hard work to turn the dream into reality is paying off.
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors and shelter staff continue fundraising efforts to pay monthly operating expenses while raising the remainder of the money for construction costs. It costs about $35,000 each month to provide food, shelter and medical care for the cats and dogs living in our care. On top of that, the new shelter will cost $2,090,000 to build. While we have raised $1,300,000 of the construction costs already and have financing in place for the balance, we are focused on raising money to diminish the amount financed, which in turn, will lower monthly operating costs of the new shelter.
Your support is more important now than ever before. The transition from the old shelter to the new shelter will be very exciting yet financially challenging. This is why WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Please consider making a year-end tax-deductable donation to help with the transition to the new shelter so HSSM can continue to provide food, shelter and medical care to homeless cats and dogs in southwestern Michigan.
You can visit the shelter to make a cash, check or credit card donation, or donate on line by credit card to become a Building Fund Sponsor (CLICK HERE) or to become a Building Foundation Donor (CLICK HERE).
Our shelter staff works extremely hard, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to provide each dog and cat with love and affection and the food, shelter and medical care they deserve. Please help us help them.
The Humane Society is a private, not-for-profit, corporation organized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and receives no local, state or federal funding to support its operation.
Very truly yours,
Don G. Blackmond

The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan was built in 1964. A second wing was added in 1989. Today, the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan is at a critical juncture in its history: we have exceeded the capacity in our existing shelter, the design is old and ineffective, and the facility is worn out and deteriorating. At present, we can house only 60 dogs and 100 cats, but the need is so much greater.
We have an exciting opportunity!
We have recently acquired five acres of land on M-139 in Royalton Township, north of John Beers Road. With this land, the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan can grow and enhance our community involvement. A larger, modern shelter will add capacity, increase efficiency and performance, and provide Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan with the ability to save more cats and dogs in Berrien County, providing them with a better quality of life while they await their forever homes.
